New Australian GC champion
Lester Hughes is the new Australian Golf Croquet champion.
The weather was typically Autumn in Melbourne - still, cold mornings, lovely sunny days.
Play started with a round robin in two blocks of 15. At the end of the round robin Lester headed Block A and David Wise Block B.
Lester dominated throughout the event - he lost only two games in the round robin and went through the knockout rounds without dropping a game. The final with Geoff Hull was a very well contested match. Geoff played some wonderful shots and it was a very tactical match.
Lester’s shot to win the second game was a highlight of the event. He jumped Geoff’s ball in the 11th hoop from near the border to win the game. A pity it was not captured on video.
Geoff is to be congratulated on the way he played throughout the tournament. His improvement has been steady and he will be a threat in the years ahead.
The players who did not make the knockout round entered the plate event. The contest was close and went right to the last game. Patricia Watts played John Arney with both on 8 wins from their 10 games played. Trish won 7/3 to win the event.

I am so grateful to everyone involved for making my task so much easier. A special mention to Lorraine Gutcher who acted as Deputy Tournament Manager and Jim Clement as tournament Referee - great commitment over the entire nine days of both events. Players, referees, VCA staff, and spectators. It was a great event with a wonderful spirit. Our referees worked hard with the assistance of players in setting hoops, helping with management of the event, checking the scores and draws - everyone played a part in making the event so successful.
Thrilling end to Metro GC Shield season
On 25 May a very exciting Metro Shield Final was played at Cairnlea, with Kew and Mornington neck and neck throughout the day.
AC Metro Pennant Autumn results
This season there were only two sections in the AC Metro Pennant, with fewer AC players being available to participate.
For those who did play, there was healthy competition and in the low-handicap section a nail biting result.
