GVCA AC Singles Tournament

Division 4 of the GVCA Association Croquet Open Singles Tournament was played at Rich River Croquet Club on May 27 & 28. Due to the Victorian Covid-19 lockdown Divisions 1 and 2 competition on May 29 and 30 had to be cancelled. We enjoyed some close competition in the Div 4 round robin. Our winner was John James of Deniliquin who played very strongly to win all four of his games, pegging out in two of them and scoring 91 hoops. Runner up was Bruce Shaw of Maryborough who won three out of his four games, pegging out in all three, and only losing to John. Bruce finished with 94 hoops. Third place went to John Murdoch of Quarry Hill and fourth to Dave Maher of Rich River. Well done to all players who competed with friendly rivalry and great spirits. Thank you to tournament manager Marjorie Grant and her team of helpers for putting together a successful, if shortened, tournament.

GVCA GC Singles Tournament

The GVCA GC Open Singles Tournament was held at Rich River on May 19 and 20. The tournament attracted 43 players from 20 clubs around Vic & NSW and was played in three Divs based on handicaps. Each division was in two blocks of round robin games and the block winners played off in a final to determine division winners and runners up. Div 1 block winners Russ Smyth of Rich River and John James of Deniliquin faced each other in a very close encounter which held spectators’ attention until the last stroke. Russ took the win with 7 hoops to John’s 6. Block winners in Div 2, Ian Fasham of Sorrento and Dave Maher of Rich River also played a close match, with Dave coming through as the winner at hoop 12, beating Ian 7 hoops to 5. In Div 3 Clint Chandler of Ballarat Western was undefeated in his block’s round robin and faced Alan Holding of Rich River in the block playoff. Clint won the game 7 hoops to 3, remaining undefeated for the tournament. LtoR: Clint Alan Russ John Ian Dave

GVCA GC Champion of Champions

The GVCA Champion of Champions team won the Lefel Shield for the team with the most hoops at the Golf Croquet Regionals at Cairnlea on 1st and 2nd May. It was a great team effort with all three contributing well. Russ Smyth of Rich River was third in Div 1 where four players won 7 games with nett hoops of 15, 14, 13 and 12. Peter Whittakers of Deniliquin was runner up in his division by one game although he scored more hoops than the winner. Graham Tyack of Numurkah came in 5th out of 12 after some very close games.

GVCA AC Champion of Champions

GVCA AC Champion of Champions were decided at Rich River in late March. The winners: Div 1 Kenn Boal (Rich River, unopposed), Div 2 Louise Vale (Numurkah), Div 3 Russ Smyth (Rich River) and Div 4 John James Deniliquin). Louise, Russ and John played at the VCA Country Regional Championships in Portland, joined by Lyle Carey who replaced Kenn in Div 1. They performed very well, finishing 6th out of 9 teams in The Shield for the team with the most hoops. Lyle did a great job playing regional Victoria's best in Div 1. Winning one game, he lost one by a single hoop and had some close games. In Div 2 Louise played well over all three days, winning five out of her eight games. Russ gained third place in Div 3 after three players finished with 6 wins out of 8 games and placings were determined on hoops scored. In Div 4 John finished the tournament with three wins out of eight games, losing one game by one hoop and having a couple of close games.

GVCA Autumn Pennant 2021

Kyabram Croquet Club hosted the grand final of the GVCA Autumn Pennant on April 12. Ladder leaders Deniliquin played Shepparton J in a well contested final, winning 7 games 75 hoops to Shepparton's 5 games 65 hoops. Congratulations to winners Peter Whittakers, Terry Murphy, Brian Dudley and Ray Moye. Congratulations also to the Shepparton J team for making the grand final.
