GVCA AC Tournament May 2023

Our 2023 AC tournament was held May 25-28 at Rich River. Competitors came from around Victoria, Port Macquarie and South Australia. This tournament grows in stature every year and now takes its place as one of the State’s best. We acknowledge the work from the volunteers that “make the magic happen”. Greg Hill of Brunswick won Div 1 by pegging out in all 5 of his games. Runner-up Lindsay Patullo of Charlton won 3 of 5 games. In Div 2a Trevor Taylor of Kew won all 4 games ahead of John Young of Mooroopna with 3 wins. Div 2b winner, Bill Humphreys of Quarry Hill, also won all 4 games. Tim Woolford-Smith, Port Macquarie was runner up with 2 wins. 4 competitors in Div 3 played 2 rounds. The winner was Bruce Shaw of Quarry Hill with 5 wins from 6 games. Runner-up was Tony Pye of Eastern Park who won 4 of 6 games. There were 7 players in Div 4, 3 of whom won 4 of 6 games. David Pryor of Kew was the winner with +24 nett hoops ahead of runner up Irene Murdoch of Quarry with +15.

GVCA AC Champion of Champions

Our AC "Champion of Champions" was held at Rich River on 29 March, with member clubs' Champions competing for the GVCA Champion title. In Div 1 Kenn Boal of Rich River was uncontested winner. John Young of Mooroopna took the Div 2 title from Russ Smyth of Rich River after a best-of-three contest. In Div 3 Helen Hastie of Mooroopna took home the trophy after defeating John James of Rich River in a best-of-three. John represented us in Swan Hill as Helen was unavailable. In a round robin of 4 entrants in Div 4 David “Doc” Ryant of Rich River won all three of his games, ahead of Brian Harwood of Mooroopna who won two. At Swan Hill Kenn finished in 4th place in a field of croquet's elite, ahead of some very strong competition. John Young, John James and Doc Ryant all won their divisions, each only losing one game in their 8 game round robin. Because of these great results, the GVCA team finished second in the teams Shield event for the most hoops scored with 454 hoops to Geelong's 468.

GVCA GC Champion of Champions

Our “Champion of Champions” was run in 3 Divs at Shepparton on 15-16 March. Member club's Champions competed to represent GVCA in the VCA Regionals. In Div 1 3 players vied for the title in the last 2 games. Russ Smyth of Rich River won with 4 wins from 4 games, pushing Darren McLoughlan of Deniliquin into second place in the last game. Darren finished with 2 wins, as did John Young of Mooroopna who finished third with fewer nett hoops. In Div 2 Peter Whittakers of Deniliquin took the title with 6 wins and only 1 loss. Runner up was Kevin Milner of Euroa on 5 wins, and Wayne Comer of Shepparton was third with 4. Shepparton’s Vienna Betts won Div 3 after playing well all day and winning all 6 of her games. Second spot went to Sandra Retallick of Rich River with only 1 loss and 5 wins, and third place went to Anne Murray of Euroa with 3 wins. In the Regionals our players didn't come home with a medal, but finished a creditable third in the Lefel Shield, one game behind the winner

GVCA GC Spring Pennant Final

Our AC Pennant year came to an end with the final held at Mooroopna Croquet Club on 7 Dec. The season was rocky with heavy rain, flooding and road closures causing the cancellation of half the programmed matches. But the weather was pleasant for the final between Rich River and Shepparton, and players and spectators enjoyed the day. After the first two games of Doubles, the teams were tied on games when Kevin Maloney and Joan Robinson of Shepparton defeated Russell Smyth and Ian Grant of Rich River, and the Rich River team of John James and Dave Maher defeated Beryl Kelly and Veronica Richardson. Rich River was only two hoops ahead, but they ran away in the Singles, winning all four games. The final scores were Rich River 5 games 95 hoops, Shepparton 1 game 53 hoops. Congratulations to Russ Smyth and John James of Rich River who both pegged out in their Singles. Pictured: Ian Grant, Dave Maher, John James and Russ Smyth with Lea Grant, GVCA President
