Australia Day competition for the intrepid

We had a wet and wild start to our Australia Day competition this year, held on Thursday 23 January -  but the field of 18 intrepid players prevailed and we even managed to begin on time!

The day cleared and the battle for the titles in each of three sections was fought hard, in wonderful Aussie spirit.

This competition is a sought-after notch on the belt of our regular entrants and is a fun day, played by all ranges of handicap in a level play format.

Congratulations to all our winners and thanks to everybody who participated in a relaxed (if competitive croquet can be called relaxed!) but earnest day’s contest.

Final results were:

Section 1

Winner – Owen Dickinson (Essendon) with 4 wins from 5 games.
Runner-Up – Richard Parks (Monash) with 3 wins from 5 games, taking the silver by nett hoops from John van der Touw and Chas Quinn, both also on 3 wins.

Section 2

Winner – Ruth Duffy (Corowa Civic) with 5 wins from her 5 games (the only member of her group to win all games)
Runner-Up – Fay Harrison (Drysdale) with 4 wins.

Section 3

Winner – Virginia Rowe (Ballarat Alexandra) with 3 wins from 4 games
Runner-up – David Hinds (Brimbank) who along with Kathie Pitt from Ballarat Western had 2 wins. David took the silver with a higher nett hoop count.

Our gratitude goes to all our referees who give so kindly of their time and expertise. Many thanks to our Tournament Referee John Grieve and his team of Jean Deacon, Alan Jenkins, Anna Miller, Eric Miller and Terry Wilson.

Strenuous competition for Victorian GC Doubles title

Ten teams came to Cairnlea determined to make their mark and take home the hardware for this year’s Croquet Victoria Open Doubles.

Over the two days, nine rounds and a best of 3 play off for positions were played in beautiful mid-temperature weather. The competition was a pleasure to watch.

Battle for Victorian GC Singles Championship

The VCA Open Singles Championship for 2020 was held over 26 and 27 January and saw twenty-eight fierce competitors don their croquet armour and storm the battlefield that is the gentle green courts of the Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea.

Some of our players had braved both the Australia Day Tournament and the Doubles in the days previous, so it was really great to see so many people enjoying their croquet for such an extended period. It was lovely to see so many people enjoying the friendship and camaraderie that is forged through meeting each other on the lawns.
