Close finishes in GC President's Eights

One of the most important events on the ACA Calendar – the Golf Croquet President’s Eights – was held at Cairnlea from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 February.  Players from all states and territories where croquet is played gathered to compete.

The first three eights are arranged by the players’ grade.  There is also a separate eight for women.  The format for play is a round robin event with players playing a best of three match.  As we had only eight lawns available all matches were double banked.

Young gun a winner in croquet

Jamie Gumbrell, aged 18, is an up and coming croquet player. He has just come third in the prestigious President’s Eights, competing in the top Eight for the best available Golf Croquet players in Australia.

Now he has won $1000 for a video entitled Croquet: For the young at heart! See

Jamie sees croquet as competitive, strategic, social, exciting, fast, challenging, vicious, intense and thrilling – requiring accuracy, endurance and skill.

He entered his video in a competition for tertiary students under 30, organised by Croquet Victoria. Judges were Bob Grieve (Dreamworld Productions) and Sonja Kiernan (Victoria University). Sonja writes that she and Bob agreed that Jamie’s submission is worthy of first prize.

"We both agreed that the thought and effort that went into putting the film together did address that croquet is for all ages, it did spark curiosity on my part about the sport and that it is a fun sport to play."

Jamie is in his second year at the University of Canberra studying Software Engineering. He has been playing croquet for the past four years, and will be competing in the Under 21 and World Open Golf Croquet Championships that are being held in England in July.

In his spare time he enjoys making YouTube videos.

For this video he was assisted behind the camera by younger brother Samuel (aged 16) who is a Year 11 student. He is a keen video creator who has been studying media at school for a number of years. Jamie says, “Samuel does not play croquet and hasn't realised what he is missing out on.”
