Australian AC Open Doubles and Singles Championships

This tournament was held at VCC from 16th to 24th November 2024 with the Doubles for the first three days followed by six days of Singles.

Doubles

There were nine pairs playing a single game round robin with the top two pairs playing off for the Championship in a best-of-3 Final.

The winners were Dwayne McCormick (Norwood, SA) and Lachlan Berryman (MCC, Vic) beating Stephen Forster (Belmont, Vic) and Lindsay Patullo (Charlton, Vic) 26TP(Lachlan)-14, 26-12.  Lachlan’s triple peel (TP) in the final was quite impressive with difficult conditions and tight hoops.

In 3rd place was Trevor Bassett (Cooks River, NSW) and Jenny Clarke (United, NZ).

Singles

There was a small field of 14 players for the Singles.  They played a single game round robin with the top 8 players going through to best-of-3 Quarterfinals and Semi’s and a best-of-5 Final.

Conditions were quite tough to start with, but players soon adapted and the highlight of the block round was 5 triple peels from 10 wins by Dwayne McCormick.  Stephen Pearce, Trevor Bassett and Callum Hyland did two TP’s each and visiting English player David Fuller completed one.

Jenny Clarke from New Zealand, who had previously won the event three times, unfortunately had to withdraw after 8 games with an ankle injury.

Play commenced at 7 am on the Quarterfinals and Semifinals days to mitigate the high temperatures in the mid 30’s.  The conditions were uncomfortable, but they didn’t cause play to be halted under the heat policy.

The Australian AC Singles Championship was won by Dwayne McCormick from Callum Hyland 1-26, 26TP-1, 26-24, 26-5.  It was Dwayne’s first win in this event and Callum’s first final.  Trevor Bassett was third, Lachlan Berryman was fourth and Stephen Pearce (Canberra) was fifth.  Kerri-Ann Organ (Canberra) won all her games to win the consolation Plate event.  The AB Morrison Encouragement Award was won by Lewis Mercer (Traralgon, Vic).

Thanks to the Tournament Referee Mike Cohn and referees Brian Foley, Chas Quinn, Kate Patrick and trainee Trevor Taylor.  The caterers Rosalie and Dennis Newman also did an outstanding job.
