Vic Open Doubles – 24th and 25th  January

Thankyou to the players for a wonderful 2 day event held at Cairnlea . We had 16 doubles entries so a full 2 days of play with many new faces to the Vic Doubles. Weather gifted us 2 pleasant days of play.

All players performed admirably with strong competition. We especially welcomed the WA team of Brett and Janine McHardy  who are well known to Australian croquet.

On Friday a mild 24◦ evening the Horsham Croquet Club commemorated the special day with 38 Golf Croquet Players in attendance while only 32 played. Members from Dimboola and Kalimna were also asked to join in at 5.30pm. President Donna Frost thanked everybody who attended and asked Morva Gilsenan to raise the flag while the Australian National Anthem was sung.

Morva joined the club in 2005 and has held many positions in our club while also being involved volunteering in the Community, she is dealing  withmany health issues, but Morva fortunately is a “fighter”

Australia Day Tournament on 26th January 2024

VCC hosted the Aust Day Tournament on 26th January and thanks go to all the participating 36 players. It was wonderful to see so many clubs throughout Victoria represented. 6 divisions were played and we all had a very enjoyable day with winners and runners-up from a variety of regions and clubs.

Catering at Cairnlea by RNB croquet club was very successful and we concluded Australia Day with a BBQ dinner which was well attended and allowed many players to  relax, socialize and meet other competitors from around Victoria.

Thankyou in particular to the referees for making these tournaments over the whole 5 days so successful. A big thanks to John Van der Touw and Tony Pye in particular who refereed 18 games per round on Australia Day. It was also great to see other referees who had a bye – jump in and assist.   Thanks also to Sue Baker and Sue Downie for assisting with croquet scores updates and court allocation – this helped the tournament run smoothly.

The Victorian Open Singles event was played at Cairnlea on 27th and 28th of January. We had a large field of 40 competitors. 16 players went through to the 1st final . All remaining players continued in a plate competition. All final matches were all of an extremely high standard and it was lovely to see a large number of competitors stay to enjoy the spectacle of the grand final match enjoying the strategy and skills on display.

Elaine Coverdale won the event in an extremely tough final against Brett McHardy from WA. Congratulations to all players and finalists in particular for their participation – many of these players managed 5 days in total with back-to-back tournaments of Vic Open Doubles, Australia Day and Vic Open Singles!!

We hope to see these players return next year along with some new faces of up-and-coming Vic and interstate croquet players.
