Victorian Men's and Women's Golf Championships

The Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea hosted the Men’s and Women’s Victorian Golf Championships on the weekend of 5th and 6th August. Players from throughout the state attended with players from Albury, Wodonga, Wangaratta,  Howlong, Portland, Geelong, Gippsland, Bendigo Metropolitan and outer Melbourne in attendance.

Although a little cool and windy on Saturday – weather improved slightly on Sunday with the competition being completed in cool but dry conditions. Thanks again to the Cairnlea team who provided courts in such great condition- special thanks to Lester, Kevin, Owen, Chas, Suhail and Stephen who do so much behind the scene work in preparation and upkeep.

Thanks must go to all who attended and made the event so competitive- a high standard of croquet was on offer and the finalists proved to have a strong battle to win their way through the competition. Mention must also be made to some of the 1st time competitors – Rosie Scott from Traralgon, Kerry Anne Jones from Brimbank, Antoinette Green from Portland , Ruth Iser ( Quarry Hill) and welcome back to Chelsea Williams post her maternity break. It is all these competitors who help to make such a strong field and successful tournament.

The final 8 draw brought out the best in many players both male and female and competition was close as  shown by the scores and length of games.  Congratulations to all finalists.

”Carnival of Croquet“ at Cairnlea

A very successful and  enjoyable weekend was held at the ” Carnival of Croquet “ on August 19th to 20th.  Many participants came to Cairnlea for the 1st time and enjoyed  the weekend of fun. Thanks to participants Rosie and Lynette who travelled from Traralgon, Janet and Margaret from Bacchus Marsh , Melinda, and Ray from Queenscliff, David and Clare from Kew , Loretta from Mooroopna and  the Eaglehawk club who supported the weekend  along with local participants who took time out to improve knowledge and skills.

Thanks sincerely to Kevin Beard for AC coaching, Elaine Coverdale for Gateball coaching and special thanks to Sarina and Maurice Cevaal-Hewitt for their coaching expertise in Golf croquet, Aussie, Ricochet and Snake in the Grass. The skill and expertise of these coaches put everyone at ease and ensured we all had a positive and fun experience. Part of the fun was meeting all the new faces and learning about their croquet experiences and travel.

Everyone  was provided with the  ability to partake in their choice of croquet games. We all had a wonderful time meeting new people and  learning new games which will  improve our croquet techniques and strategies. The weekend was broken into sessions throughout the 2 days which enabled participants to try a number of new games , learn and practice the  new skills learned with ongoing supervision and support.

The weather proved kind to us although windy on Saturday. Sunday proved to be a beautiful day with no wind and the need to remove coats and heavy jumpers !! We even had to find sunglasses and sunhats!!! A treat for all of us after such a cool and wet winter.

We will be running a similar event on 18th and 19th  Feb 2024  ( VCC Classic Fun Weekend), so we hope to see more participants join in the fun , partake in the facilities and expertise on offer  and continue to improve their croquet skills and knowledge in a fun and pressure free environment. Come along and try regardless of skill level or  length of time you have been playing croquet. We  will endeavor to find an activity that suits your  croquet needs!!

HORSHAM CROQUET CLUB OPENING DAY held on Thursday 17/8/2023

Di Trotter from triple H Community Radio opened the Horsham Croquet Club by “running” the first blue ball through the hoop for our season 2023-2024

Unfortunately, the Weather was rather cold and damp, although 26 Club members managed to brave the conditions before lunch and played 2 13/hoop games. After lunch every one stayed nice and warm inside the air-conditioned club room and enjoyed a lovely social chat as the weather definitely was not going to improve.

After a tasty afternoon tea and a cuppa was served up for all to enjoy, everyone went home rather tired to rest their weary bodies (not necessary from playing croquet though)

Thanks to all who helped in any way making this day possible.

Victorian Women's and Men’s Association Croquet Championships

The Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea hosted the Association Croquet Women’s and Men’s Championships on the weekend of 2nd and 3rd September. We had some interstate players – Nerida Taylor and Tim Murphy from NSW and Dwayne McCormick from SA.  Also, it was great to have Greg Fletcher playing again.  He is living in Germany and playing a few tournaments while on a shortish visit to Australia.

There was a field of 6 in the Women’s event and so they all played each other in a round robin.  Elaine Coverdale (Essendon) and Tricia Devlin (Castlemaine) both won 4 out of their 5 games and played off in the final. Tricia got a bit of a start with both balls but lost the innings.  Elaine played some great shots to start her first break of 9 including a take-off the full length of the lawn and then a superb 30-yard rush from corner 3 to hoop 1.  Her second break was equally impressive. Elaine won the final 21-4 for her 4th Victorian AC Women’s Championship.
