Running of the first hoop of the season

Under blue skies, clouds and windy wintry conditions, the new President of Croquet Victoria,  Kate Patrick ran the first hoop of the season at the Cairnlea headquarters in Melbourne on Wednesday 3rd August, 2022.

Vale Jim Saunders

Jim Saunders passed away shortly before 2:30 pm, today, 8th July 2022, after a debilitating illness.

I first met Jim when, as a member of Essendon CC, he competed in the ACA Golf Croquet Handicap Doubles (partnered by Frank Whiriskey) and Singles at Deniliquin Croquet Club in November 2007, and I was refereeing my first ACA event at the invitation of Owen Edwards.

I continued to meet him each year at that venue and around other courts in the following years, as he moved from Essendon to Drysdale and finally to Belmont. He was passionate about his Golf Croquet and he and Val would hook up the caravan to tour and play; you were as likely to meet him in SA or Qld as in Victoria.

He also gave back to croquet, the sport he loved.

VCA Men's and Women's Champions

The VCA Men’s Championship and the VCA Women’s Championship were run at Cairnlea over the 6th and 7th of August and whilst we know that many people are a little “rusty” having not played serious competition for the duration of the pandemic, that idea was a very long way from the caliber of play we saw on a full set of 12 lawns last weekend. It was a pleasure and a privilege to see croquet back in full swing and to hear the noise of old rivalries reigniting and new competitors experiencing serious Tournament play for the first time.

The Women’s competition ran in a full round robin block of 13 players, with the Tournament winner being the “top of the block” at the conclusion of all the rounds. It was such a pleasure to welcome Penny Morrison-McGill from Morwell and Mandy Banks from Bendigo for their first time competing in an Open Tournament against several of our State representatives. Nobody went home without a win and everybody contributed an extremely high level of play as well as a wonderful, cheerful and enthusiastic spirit. The final game of the block was Elaine Coverdale from Essendon versus Judy Wembridge from Bairnsdale and acted, in effect, as a final. The winner of that game would decide the Tournament winner and runner-up. It was such a tight, engrossing game to watch with Elaine eventually taking the game and the Title through a hard-fought 7-6 victory. You can’t get much closer than that! Truly, croquet at its very finest.

The 18 Men played their competition in 2 blocks with the top 2 in each block progressing to a best-of-19 point semi-final and then a best-of-19 point final. Lachlan Berryman from MCC grasped the opportunity to compete in GC and well matched the high standards he has set in his AC career. Unfortunately, Shane Downie from Traralgon was forced to withdraw early and both Shane and the quality croquet that he has become known for were greatly missed, but the show must go on and after the round robin play we ended up with four stellar semi-finalists where Chas Quinn from Yarrawonga defeated Kevin Beard, also from Yarrawonga 10-9 to progress to the final and Owen Dickinson from Essendon defeated John van der Touw from Monash, 10-4 to challenge Chas in the final. After a long battle, with neither player prepared to give an inch, Chas eventually took the Tournament, defeating Owen 10-8.

Congratulations and many thanks for a wonderful Tournament, not only to the finalists and semi-finalists, but to everybody who took part.

Croquet is back with a vengeance. Bring on the next competition!

Selectors Invitational Report

The Selectors Invitation was held at Cairnlea on the 13th and 14th August. Under initial blue sunny skies, the weather varied to cool and cloudy; but the impending forecast rain and storms held off.

An enthusiastic group of players participated with great spirit and competitiveness. There were a number of players for whom this was their 1st visit to Cairnlea and they competed admirably.

The Selectors should be congratulated for their diligence in seeking players state-wide.

Attendees from regions of Gippsland, Charlton, Bendigo, Ballarat, Shepparton, the Bellarine, Geelong, Wangaratta, Yarrawonga, Wodonga, Deniliquin, Mornington, and metro regions were all included.
