Three Golf Croquet tournaments over five days

Starting on Australia Day, the Victorian Croquet Centre hosted five successive days of highly competitive croquet.

VCA GC Australia Day tournament 26 Jan 2022
A keen group of ten golf croquet players contested the Australia Day tournament at the Victorian Croquet Centre.  This single day tournament was run as level play in a low handicap event and a high handicap event.

Owen Dickinson (Essendon) won all his games in the low handicap event with Richard Parks (Monash) in second place with only one loss.

In the high handicap event, Richard Hingst (Ivanhoe Park), in his first competitive tournament, won all his games to win the event.  Runner up was Ann Nicol (Williamstown) with only one loss.

Right: Section 2 winner Richard Hingst.

Congratulations to these players and to the other players for performing well under very hot and trying conditions.

Victorian GC Doubles Championship 27-28 Jan 2021

Seven pairs contested the Doubles championship, which was played as a Round Robin on the first day, with the top 4 pairs going through to a best-of-3 games knockout on the second day.  All games were timed to assist completion of the tournament under the oppressively hot conditions.

The top ranked pair after the first day was Philip DeAraugo & Brendan Aikman (Bendigo) with 5 wins out of 6 games.  They continued their good play to beat Ally Gray & Barry Dowling (Ivanhoe Park) in the semi-final 7-1, 7-4.  In the other semi-final, Kevin Beard & Helen Gammon (Yarrawonga/Ivanhoe Park) beat brother and sister combination Shane Downie & Julie Beasley (Traralgon/Warragul) 7-3, 7-3.

The final was a real battle to the finish with Kevin Beard & Helen Gammon winning 3-6, 7-6, 5-4 against Philip DeAraugo & Brendan Aikman.  The bell went and play ended while Brendon was about to strike his ball at hoop 10.  The ball subsequently went through the 10th hoop, which would have levelled the scores if the ball had been struck half a second earlier. You can’t get a much closer finish than that.

The playoff for 3rd place was won by Ally Gray & Barry Dowling 10-7.

Particular congratulations are due to Philip and Brendon, who put on a spectacular display of consistent clearing and hooping running against more experienced players.  Keep your eye out for them on the GC tournament circuit.

Victorian GC Singles Championship 29-30 Jan 2021

We had 23 players contesting the Singles championship in 4 blocks of 5 or 6 on the first day.  The top two in each block went on to play a 19-point quarterfinal and then best-of-3 13-point semi-final and final.

The blocks were won by Lester Hughes (Williamstown), Elaine Coverdale (Essendon), Kevin Beard (Yarrawonga) and Owen Dickinson (Essendon).  Of these, only Owen didn’t get through to the semi-finals – Richard Parks (Monash) played extremely well to beat him 10-5 in the quarter-final.  In the semi-finals Lester beat Richard 7-5, 7-4 and Kevin beat Elaine 7-4, 7-4.

The final was won by Lester Hughes who finished strongly in the final game to win a well contested match against Kevin Beard 7-5, 6-7, 7-3.  This was Lester’s 3rd Victorian Singles Championship in a row.
