Victoria's AC Gold Cup and Silver Shield

In fine sunny weather conditions, the VCA AC Gold Cup and Silver Shield tournaments were held on the weekend 5 and 6 February 2022. These are high level events with a total of 16 players competing, eight in each block playing a single round robin format.

All members of the 2022 Eire Cup played giving them all a good opportunity to compete against other high-level players. The standard of play was high in each event.

Gold Cup

The clear winner was Ken Bald (Horsham Kalimna Park) who won games with no losses. It was good to see Ken back on the courts and playing so well after a long layoff due to injury.

Four players had four wins each, their final placings decided on nett hoop differences. Greg Hill was second, Stephen Forster third, Kenn Boal fourth and Chris Grant fifth.

Silver Shield

Competition was tight in this event. After six rounds,  Elaine Coverdale and Tricia Devlin both had six wins and were drawn to play each other in the final round. The game was close fought throughout and when normal time expired Tricia was leading 11 hoops to 9. However, at the expiration of the extension period, scores were level on 11 each and Elaine went on to win 12 hoops to 11.

Two players had four wins with placings decided on nett hoops. Andrew Wootton was placed third and Chas Quinn was fourth.

Thanks to Brian Reither who managed the tournament capably while also competing in the Silver Shield, referees Mike Cohn, Kate Patrick and Brian Foley and the various helpers who prepared the courts and set the hoops.
