Inaugural Jean Rentoul Memorial tournament

Tuesday 30 and Wednesday 31 March brought the Inaugural battle for the Jean Rentoul Memorial to the Victorian Croquet Centre at Cairnlea – and it was really wonderful to be back playing again after COVID, especially at this great Centre that many of us have missed so much.

The Jean Rentoul Memorial is an Association Tournament for women with a handicap between 10 and 20 (sections 3 and 4), and what a lovely, fun group we had to kick off a busy return to competition at Cairnlea.

Jean Rentoul was a Queenscliff stalwart who passed away at 105 years of age, following many long years of a love for croquet and a desire to assist in the development of women in section three and four and to entice them to compete. If this competition was anything to go by, then Jean’s legacy will continue to do just that for a long time to come. On her passing, Jean left a bequest to VA which has created a generous prize purse that drew players from all over Victoria.

Sixteen entrants from Ballarat, Yarrawonga, Colac, Belmont, Brighton, Horsham, Elsternwick, Brunswick, Easter Park, Monash, Twin City and Naracoorte fought for two days to be the winners of their respective Blocks.

In the end the results were: -

Block 1 Winner – Beth Lewis (Ballarat Alexandra)

            Runner-Up – Kerry Cullen (Colac)

Block 2 Winner – Patricia Hester (Kalimna Park)

Runner-Up – Sue Chandler (Ballarat Alexandra).

Cheryl O’Dwyer from Yarrawonga also took home a prize, having scored a break of 7 hoops in the “highest break of 6 or more” competition. Cherry Bluff of Belmont and Kerry Cullen of Colac both made breaks of 6. Congratulations to everyone on two great days of wonderful croquet played in great spirit and with an infectious sense of fun and camaraderie.

A huge thank you must go to Jean for her kind and inclusive bequest. It’s wonderful to see the section 3 and 4 players out on the lawns having a red-hot go – several of our competitors had not played at Cairnlea before. Thanks must also go to the VCA for creating this Tournament to honour Jean’s wish to get all levels of players out and competing.

Special thanks also to Lester Hughes, Greg Hill and Owen Dickinson for the amazing work you are doing to keep the lawns looking absolutely beautiful and running like a dream. All the volunteers who are working so hard to keep Cairnlea up and running will be rightly proud of the condition the grounds team have our Centre in. Thank you.

Thank you also to Kevin Beard and David Johnston for setting out the lawns and having our show courts ready for battle. Your work is greatly appreciated.

Cleaning up after Tournaments is now a communal responsibility and we can’t say enough how much we appreciated David and Mignon Johnston who came late on the final day, specifically to get stuck in and help with the larger cleaning job and to all of the players themselves who, after two days of croquet, cheerfully and enthusiastically did everything asked of them and more.

We hope you all had as much fun as we did. We look forward to many more years of this fun and exciting Tournament. See you all again next year – and bring your friends. More entrants – more competition = more fun and more new friends.

Goulburn Valley Team wins 2021 Lefel Shield at the Regionals

The GVCA representatives went home with big smiles after winning the Lefel Shield, but they probably would have had the smiles anyway after a great weekend at Cairnlea.

Congratulations to our team who won the Lefel Shield today for the team with the most hoops at the Golf Croquet Regionals. It was a great team effort with all three contributing well.
