Horsham Croquet Club: Doubles Championships 2021

On 4 March Horsham Croquet Club played their Annual Golf Croquet Doubles Championships.

Unfortunately, only 9 pairs entered the 3 Divisions playing 13 hoop games (first to 7). All those who attended still enjoyed themselves, matches were closely contested on a lovely Autumn Day.

Thanks to our Match Committee and Captain Marj for organising the day, Handicapper Rosemary and Referee Lyn.

Laws of Association Croquet update

The Croquet Australia Secretary has provided the following information for state associations - see the News page on the Croquet Australia website.

The WCF Council approved the 7th Edition of the Association Croquet Laws on 24 February 2021.  It has been decided that the new Laws will apply in Australia from 1 July 2021.

Law books in A5 and A6 format are at the printers.  A new version of the Official Rulings on the Laws of Association Croquet (ORLAC) is near finalisation.  Croquet Australia intends to print a merged version of the Laws and ORLAC when available (which should be soon).

Wimmera Croquet Association 2021 GC Doubles

Wimmera Croquet Association played their Annual Doubles Championships on Wednesday 17 March at Horsham Croquet Club. Lyn Creasey welcomed 24 players from three clubs in the Association, Dimboola, Kalimna and Horsham.

Lyn encouraged all to enjoy their matches and fellowship together and a complimentary afternoon tea was plated and available after play. Judy Baker from Dimboola and Marj Ward from Kalimna won the lucky prizes.

Rae Hill (Tournament Manager) read out the first game and all proceeded to their court. There were 4 entries in each of the 3 divisions.      

There were some very close matches and results in all divisions, especially in Division 2 (count back). Thanks to all who participated and were involved in running this Championship especially to Rae.

Division 1

Winners:       I. Rees & G. Devlin (3 games +21 -8, net +13)
Runners up:  D. Frost & B. Etherton (2 games +18 -15, net +3)

Division 2

Winners:       Y. & B. Dunn (2 games +19 -14, net +5) [countback]
Runners up:  M. Pope & L. Ball (2 games +19 -14, net +5)

Division 3

Winners:       Y. Warrick & D. Wortley (2 games +19 -15, net+4)
Runners up:  M.  Ward & B. Drendel (2 games +19 -18, net +1)

“Not the Eire Cup”  - an event at Cairnlea with Alternate Stroke Doubles

A new event called “Not the Eire Cup” was held at the Victorian Croquet Centre 12-14 March 2021. The idea for the event arose because the real Eire Cup to be held in Sydney at this time was cancelled due to the risk of border closures resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Not the Eire Cup” was contested between teams of 2 players with a state team/squad player paired with a player with a handicap up to 10. Matches consisted of a Doubles game and Singles games between the low handicap players and between the high handicap players.

Victorian State Gateball Championships

The Victorian state gateball championships were a great tournament this year despite not being able to hold the tournament the year prior due to the pandemic.

Teams contesting for the title of Vic state champions were Essendon, Kew, Hazelbrook/Strathfield and Albury/Yarrawonga.
