Advancing Croquet in Victoria

Earlier news

From midnight tonight, for five days, Victoria goes into Stage 4 lockdown.

Only four reasons to leave the house. Masks whenever you go out.

Community sport facilities are closed. No play. This includes croquet.

Watch this space for updates affecting croquet.

The Return to Croquet guidelines will be updated as we emerge from Stage 4.

AC shines at Brunswick

Brunswick Mallet Sports Club wound up its eight-day annual AC Electric Light Tournament with some fine play and close games between some of the best players in the state. A fitting end to a successful tournament.

There were four sections, 26 players in all, from clubs as far apart as Ringwood, MCC, Portland, Yarrawonga and Brighton. There was a good showing from Brunswick itself, from novices to veterans - and we discovered that Paul Ryan (now MCC) was Secretary at Brunswick when Kevin Beard (now Yarrawonga) played for the first time.

COVID release

Following the end of the five day circuit breaker lockdown, Victoria has returned to its COVID-safe summer. Masks indoors and on public transport; social distancing; continuance of hygiene requirements and COVID-safe plans. Subject to density limits, community sport can resume and clubhouses can re-open.

Some changes to the COVID-safe summer have been introduced, but they do not affect croquet.

It has been clarified that the limit of 20 people attending public gatherings does not apply to gatherings of sports club members for the purposes of their sport. As before, sports meetings indoors are limited by the space available; sports meetings outdoors are limited to 100.

Croquet Victoria has updated its Return to Croquet guidelines to include this point.

Good performances at VCA Gold Cup and Silver Shield

The VCA Gold Medal and Silver Shield competitions in Association Croquet were held at VCC Cairnlea over the weekend 27 and 28 February 2021.

There were eight players in the Gold Medal and seven players in the Silver Shield, both competing in a single round robin format. Due to reduced player availability, the Bronze Shield was not contested this year. Weather conditions were cool to fine with no wind – a rarity at the venue. The standard of play was generally good, considering that most players have had limited opportunities for high level competition for the past year.
