Keenly contested Vic AC Doubles

The Victorian Open Doubles Championship was keenly contested at Cairnlea on Friday 27 and Saturday 28 December.

A smaller than usual entry (not surprising with a number of players electing not to come to Cairnlea twice in such a short time with the World Championships coming up!), but the contest was close and some excellent croquet was displayed by the players.

There were eight pairs and a full round robin was played with the two top teams progressing to a single game final.  While Robert Fletcher and Malcolm Fletcher (Ballarat Alexandra) won all their games to progress, the battle for their opponents was much closer.  It went right to the last round.  Although Callum Hyland and David Johnston (Sandy Bay / Ballarat Alexandra) won their last round match against Alan Honey and Kerri-Ann Organ (Canberra) it was not enough to keep Alan And Kerri-Ann from qualifying for the final ahead of Kevin Beard and Simon Watkins (Yarrawonga / Brighton).  The three pairs were equal on games with 5 wins apiece.  Alan and Kerri-Ann ended with a 6 hoop buffer over Kevin and Simon.

The final was won by Robert and Malcolm 26-0.  It was great to have Robert and Malcolm playing at Cairnlea again.  The standard they set for everyone else is to be greatly admired. Unfortunately Robert and Malcolm will not be able to contest the singles due to their business commitments.

We welcomed Rod White (Ballarat Western) back to competitive croquet and hope we get to see him at many more tournaments.

My thanks to Chas Quinn for his help in setting the hoops; to Brian Foley, Mike Cohn, Marie Calthorpe, Kate Patrick and Gwen Hamilton for their support in refereeing the event; and to James Hood for preparing the lawns so well.

We now move onto the singles which start Sunday and conclude on New Year's Day.

Welcome to Croquet in 2020

New Year’s Day was the final day of the Victorian Association Croquet Championships.

We had everything – extreme heat being the most significant event.  Play was suspended on Monday due to the oppressive conditions.  This put pressure on the schedule for the event but the players’ co-operation to start early and finish late on subsequent days was much appreciated.
