Second Selectors GC Invitation, 2019
The Second Selectors Invitation Tournament was held at Cairnlea over the weekend of 24 and 25 August. It was run over two days with 30 players competing in four round robin blocks of 19 point games.
Entry was by way of invitation and these were issued to a range of established and rapidly developing players. It was really pleasing to have a player under the age of 21 in the field.
Cairnlea looked almost at its best with the sun shining for the whole tournament. Cold winds prevailed on Saturday which is not unusual for this time of year. An unwelcome visitor was a fox that has been digging on certain courts for some time.
The Selectors were delighted to welcome a number of players who were relatively new to Cairnlea from clubs across Victoria. Victoria is fortunate to have great depth of enthusiastic players who are passionate about golf croquet and keen to improve and participate in tournaments.
The block play produced some excellent croquet the final outcomes not being known till the end of the tournament.
Division One was won by Stephen Templeton (Maldon) by one net hoop from Ruth Duffy (Corowa Civic) closely followed by John Oudyn (Monash) and Russell Kelly (Belmont).
Division Two was won by Maurice Cevaal-Hewitt (Twin City) from Tony Pye (Eastern Park) and John Young (Shepparton). Maurice played outstanding croquet, he went through the tournament undefeated.
Division Three was won by Darren Lester (Ararat), Just behind, and only separated by net hoops were Julie Barber (Swan Hill), Les Matthews (Drysdale) and Graham Fahey (MCC).
Division Four was won by John de Trafford (Eastern Park) on net hoops from Felix Gelman-White (Williamstown), who is a most impressive junior player, with Lorna Clarkson (Brunswick) in third place.
Congratulations to all players on a very fine tournament of high standard competitive croquet. Thanks go to Tournament Referee, Nancy Hatherell, and her supporting referees, the hoop setters and everyone who made a great weekend possible.
The event was run in conjunction with the traditional Victoria v’s Victoria A tournament which is a final warm up prior to the World Croquet Federation Interstate Shield in September. At its conclusion the State Team was presented to VCA vice president, Kate Patrick, who also presented the medals to the winners in the Selectors Invitation. Thank you, Kate.
Decisive win to Peter Landrebe in Australian GC Gold Medal

Each state conducts their qualifying event and the six winners compete in a best of three round robin format to determine the Gold Medallist. The runner up receives a Silver Medal and the other state winners receive an ACA Bronze Medal.
