Victorian Open AC Doubles

The Victorian Open AC Doubles Championship was played at VCC over the Christmas/New Year break.  Due to the work being done on the courts at Cairnlea we were restricted to 5 courts and thus had to advise players of the limitations.

We ended up with a small, but quality-laden field of 9 pairs.  The top seeds were Greg and Malcolm Fletcher (Ballarat Alexandra) in one block and Robert Fletcher and Callum Hyland (Ballarat Alexandra / Sandy Bay) in the other.

Victorian Open AC Singles

This year's AC Open Singles attracted quality players from across Australia, and every state was represented in the finals.

Entry numbers were limited to 20 and most play was double banked, as we had access to only five courts - the other seven courts at the VCC are being refurbished.

Two blocks of ten resulted in five games each round per block, with double banked games for all nine rounds. We played four rounds on each of the first two days, with the final round robin game played on Monday morning.

The eight finalists played a best of three match all the way from quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.  An early finish on New Year’s Day was appreciated by the players as many had long distances to drive (or fly) after the event.

The quarter finals were won by Simon Hockey (SA), Trevor Bassett (NSW), Alan Honey (Canberra) and Kevin Beard (Victoria - Yarrawonga).  In the semi-finals Simon beat Trevor, while Alan beat Kevin.  Full details on

The game between Kevin and Trevor for the 3rd and 4th play off was one of the more exciting games of the day with a lot of long roquets and challenging tactics. It ended with Kevin one hoop up, 23OTP:22.

Simon continued his winning form in the final, beating Alan in straight games.

Simon completed 9 triple peels in his block with two more in his six finals games.  An imposing total of 11 TPs in 15 games.  A true champion in going through the event without a loss. Congratulations to Alan for reaching his first Vic Open final.

Our thanks to the contingent of referees over the week. A special mention to Mike Cohn for his attendance on all but one day of the event. We welcomed Owen Edwards back on the day Mike rested as TR. It was great to see Owen looking so well. Brian Foley called in on the last day - and we wish him well in his recovery from surgery.

My thanks to Kevin Beard for his exceptional pre-tournament organisation, arranging the event and setting the courts up. It was greatly appreciated.

We look forward to returning with a full complement of courts for the next Victorian Open in late December / early January. We look forward to your support and entry.
