Brunswick hosts Invitation GC tournament

It was a great day on 17 November 2018 at Brunswick Mallet Sports Club when the club hosted its inaugural Invitation Golf Croquet Tournament.

Ten players with handicaps of 3 or less participated under the level play format in two round robin blocks, with the top two players from each block progressing to the semi-finals, and establishing the finalists.

Tightly contested GC Metro Shield final

This was a most exciting final between Ivanhoe Park Burgundy and Brimbank.

These teams had dominated their respective blocks throughout the home and away season and it was no surprise to have such a competitive day.

Sometimes tough games can result in highly contested hoops, and the last game of the day, which decided the day's outcome, had a first hoop which took 35 minutes to resolve.

Trevor Bassett and Jenny Clarke win Australian AC Open Doubles Championship

A field of nine pairs contested the Australian Open Doubles Championship.

The event was held over three days at the Victorian Croquet Centre with five rounds of a Modified Block followed by the top eight pairs going through into a Best-of-3 Knockout.

In the Block play the two top placed pairs, Alison Sharpe & Jim Nicholls and Jenny Clarke & Trevor Bassett, won all their games.

These two pairs won their Quarter Final matches 2-0. In the Semi Finals Alison Sharpe & Jim Nicholls beat Callum Hyland & Claire Bassett 26-0, 26-14 and Jenny Clarke & Trevor Bassett beat Kevin Beard & Terry Hopkins 26TP(Trev)-10, 26-4 to reach the Final.

The Final was a war of attrition with some very good play and tactics intermingled with many breakdowns from both pairs. Jenny Clarke & Trevor Bassett had the best of the play and came out on top in the end 26-24, 16-5.

Jenny has travelled from New Zealand to play with Trevor in this event over many years and they were very pleased to have finally won it for the first time. Congratulations to this talented pair.

The complete set of results for all games can be found on Croquetscores at

A very big thank you to the sponsors, Parbery Consulting, for providing prize money, arranging and cooking a BBQ during the Doubles, and giving a commemorative shirt to each player.

Many thanks to Brian Reither for managing the event and Mike Cohn and his team of referees.

VCA Bronze Medal (AC) at Shepparton

For the second year in a row the VCA Bronze Medal was held at Shepparton.  The courts there are in excellent condition and the members of the club made us all most welcome.

The large spectator group was treated to some excellent croquet.  Robert Fletcher was in fine form on Saturday and executed three triple peels and one sextuple peel in his four games.  Some tactical games between the other players held the attention of the onlookers.  The weather was hot, the courts were great and the players thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to show their skills.
