Posted by: Mike Cohn Posted on: 2018-10-18 News Type: Association ACA Association Croquet President’s EightsBeautiful spring weather was enjoyed by all over the four days of competition. The freshly scarified lawns were of good speed, and the occasional gusty wind, coupled with the usual ‘hills’ provided players with challenges and frustrations. A significant number of players were unavailable to participate this year resulting in only having three blocks of 8. This provided the opportunity for new players to experience the Eights for the first time – some were first time visitors to Cairnlea. The format of the Eights, a double round robin, provides plenty of croquet and the opportunity to ‘get back at your opponent’ if they beat you in the first round and is enjoyed by all players. Competition was tight throughout the weekend with a number of very close games. The most significant being a tough final round match between new players Dave Luxmore and Murray Baum to determine the eventual winner. Congratulations to Stephen Forster (Eddie Hunt Trophy), Dave Luxmore (Tom Howatt Trophy) and Kerri-Ann Organ (Tingey Tray) , all first time winners of their respective blocks. From left: Another ‘first’ was live streaming of a number of games on Monday. This was part of a trial run by VCA in lead up to the 2020 AC World Championship. Expert commentary was provided by Callum Hyland with guest commentary from players and Robert Fletcher. This event always has four long days, and this year was no exception, although the lower number of players avoided the need for double-banking of untimed games, possibly resulting in some slightly earlier finishes. Brian Reither (as Tournament Manager) opened the premises each day at 7.00am and closed up around 8.00pm or later for the first three days; the final days was around 4.00pm. Mike Cohn (as Tournament Referee) arrived shortly later and left just before Brian; breaks in refereeing were limited to brief refreshment and toilet breaks, and lunch was eaten courtside. We thank referees, in particular Max Woolf (from Bunbury, WA) and Chas Quinn who acted for two days, Bruce and Liz Fleming (from Queensland) and Trish Watts (her first day of refereeing) all for one day each. The referees had also to reset hoops often, in particular for the First Eight where the hoops had to be set with higher precision using ball and feeler gauges as required by a changed Regulation. Thanks to all. It was good to see John Grieve present for a short time on two days. Many are aware that he has been ill, but he demonstrated his continuing interest in croquet activities. We wish him well. Mike Cohn (Tournament Referee and ACA Deputy Chair) and Jim Nicholls (Player and ACA Board member)

President Terri Manwaring writes: RNB CC has been busy doing what we do. As well as coaching and working with our local community groups who are now becoming repeat visitors we have developed new opportunities. |
