Vic AC Singles Day Four - Fletcher vs Fletcher

The play in the final between Robert and Malcolm Fletcher highlighted the demands on players at this level. A critical miss can easily see a game slip away from a player.

The final was played as a best of 5.

Robert took the first game with Malcolm hitting back hard in the second. The small band of spectators were thrilled to see such long and accurate hitting. The ball placement of both players was superb. The result really got down to which brother could hit more long lift shots.

Class doubles competition

A class field of players took to courts to decide the Victorian Golf Croquet Open Doubles title on Saturday 27 January.

The original plan to play in two blocks was changed to three blocks, to reduce the number of rounds to be played in view of the extreme weather conditions which were expected. It did turn out to be extremely hot...

The three block winners were Elaine Coverdale (Essendon) and Chas Quinn (Yarrawonga); Kevin Beard (Yarrawonga) and Darren McLoughlin (Deniliquin); and Tricia Devlin (Castlemaine) and Chris Grant (Ringwood). They were joined by Terry and Gail Hopkins (Essendon), the best ranked runners up, to play the semi-finals.  In the semi-finals Tricia and Chris beat Elaine and Chas while Terry and Gail won over Kevin and Darren.  Both games were extremely close and both were decided at the 13th hoop.

The final was a touch and go affair.  The lead see-sawed throughout the contest with some great clearance shots by all players and excellent jumping (as usual) by Terry.  Gail and Terry prevailed at the 12th hoop.

We congratulate Gail and Terry on a great win.  We thank all players and officials who worked through some very hot weather to get a result in one day.

All results are on Croquetscores.

Our thanks to Lorraine Gutcher for her management and to Jim Clement and Nancy Hatherell who bore most of the refereeing duties during the day.
