Bairnsdale and Leongatha vie for Gippsland Pennant

Well, the 2017/18 pennant season is over for another year.

First I would like to thank the Traralgon Croquet Club for allowing us to use their facilities to hold the final. The greens looked lovely and the ladies working in the kitchen were great.

Also a big big thank you to Lorraine who acted as referee this year.

Four musketeers battle it out again

After the Christmas cheer faded a committed group of 12 pairs of doubles contested the Victorian Open Doubles at Cairnlea.

The event was played in two blocks, with the leading pair in each block qualifying for the best of three games final.

The two blocks saw some very entertaining games with 11 triple peels and a sextuple (Robert Fletcher (Lismore)).

In Block A Robert and Malcolm Fletcher won each of their five games. Kevin Beard (Yarrawonga) and Jim Nicholls (Wagga) lost only the one game - to Robert and Malcolm.

In Block B Greg Fletcher and Edward Wilson (Hyde Park / Millswood) won all their five games. Runners up in this block were Callum Hyland and Fleur Brockway (Sandy Bay / East Fremantle). We welcomed Ian and Margaret Kelson (Warrnambool) to their first Vic Open Doubles event. Another new face was Roger Richmond (Queenscliff) who partnered Eric O’Donnell (Terang).

The rankings within the blocks generated a series of play offs for final position, with each pair playing their opposite number in the other block.

A most enjoyable two days was capped off by a most entertaining final between Robert and Malcolm and Greg and Edward. The first game went to Greg and Edward 26TP (EW) - 0. In the second game Edward was heading towards a clean sweep when he was hampered after running rover and missed Robert’s peg ball. Robert hit the shot and took off to the peg to level the match 26 - 24.

The third game ebbed and flowed until Edward hit a superb lift shot and completed the triple peel to seal the match with a 26 TP - 9 win.

Third placed were Kevin and Jim, winning their playoff against Callum and Fleur 26 - 19.

All results are on Croquetscores.

We now look forward to the start of the singles title tomorrow. We will keep you updated each night with progress. The singles is to be played in two blocks of 9 players in each. The top four players in each block will qualify for the final knockout.
