Deni teams fight out close final
Two teams from Deniliquin contested the Grand Final of the 2017 Goulburn Valley GC Pennant Season, which was played at Shepparton on Thursday 7th December in near perfect conditions.
The Deniliquin Diamonds had been Ladder leaders all season in the 9 team handicap play, Double Round Robin Competition.
Their opponents in the Final were the Deniliquin Gems, who had beaten the Diamonds in both home-and-away rounds this season and also in the first Semi Final.
Close struggle in Northern District GC Pennant finals
The Northern District Croquet Association 2017 Pennant Finals were held on Thursday November 23.
The finals provided a fitting end to the pennant season. Although it doesn't show in the final game scores, each hoop was closely contested. The audience were entertained with some excellent matches.
The weather was challenging for the players with heat in the morning and a storm brewing in the afternoon.

Spirited selectors' invitational
Each year the VCA conducts a Selectors’ Invitation event.
The purpose of the event is to reward players who have performed consistently during the year and pit them against players of more experience. It is an opportunity for the selectors to encourage new players to challenge themselves and for the selectors to assess the players for future events.
This year we chose 12 players, divided them into two blocks and played a round robin format with the top two in each block proceeding to a knockout semi-final and final.
At the end of the round robin, Block A was led by Greg Hill from Gail Hopkins, with Kerri-Ann Organ and Bill Humphreys the leaders in Block B.
Greg beat Bill 26/7 in their semi-final and Gail headed Kerri-Ann 18/3 in the other semi.
Greg won the final from Gail with a score line of 21/10.
Full results are available on Croquetscores.
The event was played in great spirit. As we had one referee only for each day players were encouraged to “referee” their own matches, with those players who are qualified referees acting in that capacity on nearby courts when suitable. A system we will need to get used to and refine as fewer people are able to attend to referee.
The courts are being top dressed and levelled - this presented a few problems for the players but all handled the environment as presented in a very supportive and sporting manner.
We now look forward to a short break as Christmas celebrations take over. Next week we travel to Shepparton for the ACA Bronze Medal and the next event at VCA will be the Victorian AC Open after Christmas.
Congratulations to Greg and Gail - and to all those who accepted the challenge. Hopefully you were rewarded by the excellent spirit and encouragement of everyone involved.
My thanks to our stalwart referees in Mike Cohn and Brian Foley. Your support and help to the players in very much appreciated by all.
Bairnsdale and Leongatha vie for Gippsland Pennant
Well, the 2017/18 pennant season is over for another year.
First I would like to thank the Traralgon Croquet Club for allowing us to use their facilities to hold the final. The greens looked lovely and the ladies working in the kitchen were great.
Also a big big thank you to Lorraine who acted as referee this year.
Kevin Beard wins Bronze in great AC weekend at Shepparton
