VCA AC Women’s Invitation 2017

This event is designed for the Selectors to pick high ranking female players to contest a round robin event. The event has been a great stepping stone for players coming up in the ranking to be challenged by the more experienced players.

This year was no exception. We had three members from last year’s state team (Elaine Coverdale, Kerri-Ann Organ and Gail Hopkins), joined by two ex-State team members (Lois Kirk and Lara Ketelaars) and three players vying for higher honours (Louise Vale, Patricia Watts and Margaret Fraser).

Brighton Croquet Club Open Tournament

Brighton Croquet Club ran its Open Association Croquet Tournament over the first two weekends in September.

The club was pleased to welcome players from as far afield as Sale, Ballarat/Alexandra, Ringwood as well as many local metropolitan clubs. We were also pleased to see players from the newly formed Briars Heritage Croquet Club.

Victorian Handicap Championships

The very first open event of the season at Cairnlea saw a strong entry in the top division. Lesser numbers in the bottom two sections – but nonetheless some interesting play.

Section 1 drew a field of 8 players, but unfortunately Brian Reither had to withdraw just prior to the event with a bad dose of the flu. I am sure we all preferred that he stayed in Ballarat...

The event was won by Greg Hill from Brunswick on net hoops from Bill Humphreys. The game between them decided the winner as Bill had won all his other games. Greg had been beaten earlier by Bob Roycroft, but he won his game with Bill 26/17 – enough to win the event by a couple of hoops. Bob was in third place with four wins.

Section 2 had a field of five players. The event was eventually won by Tom Kudelka from MCC with Mike Cohn in second place and Christine Eiffert in third. Each of these three won three of their games – Tom was ahead on hoops.

Section 3 also drew a field of 5 players. Reen Hancorne won three of her four games to win the event from Eileen Gough.

We are all indebted to Brian Foley who acted as Tournament Referee and to the players who doubled as referees during their byes. The weekend was a great success and I wish to thank Kaye Petersen for stepping in on the Sunday to allow me to go see my beloved Seagulls. (Unfortunately they lost!)

All results are on Croquetscores.

The season is getting into full swing now and soon we will be hosting premier ACA events – President’s 8 and AC Championships. Come along and enjoy watching the best players in Australia.
