ISS Day 5: WA beats Victoria and wins the Shield

John van der Touw writes:

Western Australia are the champions. We got off to a good start at Wynnum today, with a 2 – 0 lead after the doubles, and held on to that two match lead with a 3 – 3 result for the first round of the singles.

However, WA stormed home to win four matches to one in the final round to win the test 6 – 5. As an indication of how close it was, the final hoop score was 128 – 128.

ISS Day 4: From Our Reporter on the Spot

John van der Touw writes:

Back at McIlwraith today for the test against NSW.

As usual, games were played in very good spirits and, as you can see from the photo, even the team mascots were getting on well.

We got off to a good start with a 2 – 0 lead after the doubles, and managed to increase the lead in each round: 5 – 2 after the first singles and 10 – 4 at the end of the day.

Brighton Croquet Club Open Tournament

Brighton Croquet Club ran its Open Association Croquet Tournament over the first two weekends in September.

The club was pleased to welcome players from as far afield as Sale, Ballarat/Alexandra, Ringwood as well as many local metropolitan clubs. We were also pleased to see players from the newly formed Briars Heritage Croquet Club.

The weather, being Melbourne in the early Spring, ranged from delightful to diabolical. Fortunately the last playoff on late Sunday afternoon was completed under beautiful blue skies.

Our team of volunteers, who worked in the kitchen, did a wonderful job and lunches were definitely up to standard. One club referee was heard to grumble about missing out on the pumpkin soup…the homemade soup is a definite feature of the club’s lunches.

Club referees were supported by two of Sandringham Club’s finest: Brian Foley and Marie MacIntosh.

Our club Captain Lesley once again managed the tournament in her usual efficient manner. The tournament ran like clockwork.

VCA AC Women’s Invitation 2017

This event is designed for the Selectors to pick high ranking female players to contest a round robin event. The event has been a great stepping stone for players coming up in the ranking to be challenged by the more experienced players.

This year was no exception. We had three members from last year’s state team (Elaine Coverdale, Kerri-Ann Organ and Gail Hopkins), joined by two ex-State team members (Lois Kirk and Lara Ketelaars) and three players vying for higher honours (Louise Vale, Patricia Watts and Margaret Fraser).

Victorian Handicap Championships

The very first open event of the season at Cairnlea saw a strong entry in the top division. Lesser numbers in the bottom two sections – but nonetheless some interesting play.
