ISS Day 3: From Our Reporter on the Spot

John van der Touw writes:

Today Victoria played Queensland at McIlwraith.

The courts at McIlwraith were slower than the other courts. The photo possibly explains why. Bear in mind that the McIlwraith clubhouse is a two-storey building.

The courts are just around the corner from where the team is staying, which meant we could sleep in until 5:45 am.

ISS Day 2: From Our Reporter on the Spot

John van der Touw writes:

Today's match, between Victoria and South Australia at Wynnum, was even longer than yesterday's.

We had to get up earlier, because Wynnum is quite far from where we are staying, and the matches went for longer. In fact, it was well and truly dark as the last two games were being played. The flying foxes were circling, the lights were on and Victoria was trying to hold on to a slender lead.

ISS Day 4: From Our Reporter on the Spot

John van der Touw writes:

Back at McIlwraith today for the test against NSW.

As usual, games were played in very good spirits and, as you can see from the photo, even the team mascots were getting on well.

We got off to a good start with a 2 – 0 lead after the doubles, and managed to increase the lead in each round: 5 – 2 after the first singles and 10 – 4 at the end of the day.

Once again Trish Watts made a solid contribution to the team cause, by winning all four of her singles games and both of her doubles games (with partner Jim Saunders).

Special thanks to the members of the hosting clubs who provided lunches and delicious home-made treats.

Tomorrow we play Western Australia on the last day of the ISS. They are also undefeated and, in fact, are ahead of us on the ladder because they have won more games (112 to 100).

So, tomorrow’s test between VIC and WA is effectively a final. Whoever wins it will take home the Interstate Shield.

See Croquetscores for live results of the day's play.

ISS Day 5: WA beats Victoria and wins the Shield

John van der Touw writes:

Western Australia are the champions. We got off to a good start at Wynnum today, with a 2 – 0 lead after the doubles, and held on to that two match lead with a 3 – 3 result for the first round of the singles.

However, WA stormed home to win four matches to one in the final round to win the test 6 – 5. As an indication of how close it was, the final hoop score was 128 – 128.

Brighton Croquet Club Open Tournament

Brighton Croquet Club ran its Open Association Croquet Tournament over the first two weekends in September.

The club was pleased to welcome players from as far afield as Sale, Ballarat/Alexandra, Ringwood as well as many local metropolitan clubs. We were also pleased to see players from the newly formed Briars Heritage Croquet Club.
