AC ranking events: Gold, Silver, Bronze

On the weekend of 3/4 March, Cairnlea hosted the annual Victorian Gold Cup, Silver and Bronze Shields.  Players are invited to these events purely on their ranking.

The top eight available players go into the Gold Cup, the next eight into the Silver Shield, and another eight are invited to the Bronze Shield.  As one player was forced to withdraw late in the proceedings, the Bronze Shield ended with seven players.

The Gold Cup was dominated by our state team captain Stephen Forster (Belmont).  Stephen won all his 7 games with 4 triple peels.  Elaine Coverdale (Essendon)  was runner up with 5 wins.  David Johnston (Ballarat Alexandra) and Chris Grant (Ringwood) both had 4 wins.

The Silver Shield went right to the last round.  Going into that round Lewis Mercer (Traralgon) and John van der Touw (Monash) were equal.  Lewis lost his final game to Gail Hopkins (Essendon) and John defeated Roger Bird (Quarry Hill) to finish the winner by one game.  Lewis finished second with Gail Hopkins in third place behind him on net hoops.

The Bronze Shield was even closer as Lara Ketelaars (Ringwood) and Kevin Maloney (Bright) went into the last round equal - both having lost one game at that point.  Lara prevailed in a tight game with Kevin finishing second ahead of John Grieve (Williamstown) and Chas Quinn (Yarrawonga) - all with four wins.  It is great to see Lara returning to form and enjoying playing regularly.

The weekend proved a great preparation for our state team heading to Adelaide for the Eire Cup.  With Stephen, Elaine, Tricia Devlin, Chris Grant, Terry and Gail Hopkins all playing (and Kevin Beard and Kerri-Ann Organ playing at Cammeray) all our state team members had a great workout.

Everyone in croquet wishes the team well in our defence of the Eire Cup.  Keep up to date with the results on Croquetscores.
