Bairnsdale and Leongatha vie for Gippsland Pennant
Well, the 2017/18 pennant season is over for another year.
First I would like to thank the Traralgon Croquet Club for allowing us to use their facilities to hold the final. The greens looked lovely and the ladies working in the kitchen were great.
Also a big big thank you to Lorraine who acted as referee this year. It was great to see so many supporters from East and West to support the Club representing them.
From the beginning it was neck and neck, and by the end of the singles it was 4 games each. But Bairnsdale were up on hoops.
At lunchtime again it was 5 games each and Bairnsdale 60 hoops to Leongatha 56.
The tension was building. By the final round it was 6 all and again Bairnsdale were ahead by 1 hoop, so by the last game everyone just didn’t know how it would end.
In the last doubles Tim/Roger from Bairnsdale beat Garry/Merry 7 - 4, but Nanette/Max from Leongatha at that time were up 6 - 2 against Heather/Jan but as usual trying to make that final hoop just won't happen. The final score went to Leongatha 7 - 4.
The final result: 7 games each, 81 hoops each. This is the first time this had ever happened and there were no contingency in place for this event.
At first another doubles was going to take place, but in the end it was decided to call it a draw.
Congrats to Jan, Tim, Heather and Roger of Bairnsdale and Nanette, Max, Garry and Merry of Leongatha for your great games and sportsmanship during this final.
Again thank you to all pennant captains for getting in the results so quickly and your great support during the year .
