New winner at Williamstown
The weekend of 14 and 15 October heralded the coming of Spring. The weather was warm, the wind gentle and the courts green and in good order.
Williamstown Tournaments are known for their friendliness, food and scones. And this year - a great event. Four of the eight entrants in the -3 to 6 Range were current or former State Team members. The defending champion - Kevin Beard - was an apology. Kevin and Janette are enjoying a wonderful holiday in Canada and Alaska!
Simon Watkins and Tricia Devlin were among previous winners looking for another slant at the title. If Chris Grant beats Simon - Chris wins the event. If Simon wins then the winner between Tricia and Elaine Coverdale wins the title. In both the final games the result was decided after the bell. Chris pips Simon by two hoops, Trish beats Elaine by one hoop. The winner is Chris! Trish was runner up - on equal games to Chris but with less nett hoops, with Elaine in third placing.
A great way to finish a very competitive tournament.
Congratulations to Chris - he joins a formidable list of winners - Kevin Beard (6 times), Simon Watkins (3 times), Tony Chew (twice), Trish Devlin and Trevor Bassett all being previous winners.
All results are on Croquetscores.
Our thanks to Marie Calthorpe for her afternoon tea of scones, jam and cream - an acclaimed feature of the weekend.
My thanks to the players for acting as referees and for being so prompt and helpful over the weekend. It is a pleasure to work with such a co-operative group of players.
Victorian Divisional Championships – AC
A part of the history of Victorian croquet was continued on the weekend of 21 and 22 October.
The Tregallas and Nelson Medals are awarded to the winners of the Divisional Championships. While the original format has changed somewhat over the years it is great to see the tradition continuing.
Seniors Festival 2017
'Getting older is a reason to celebrate when October and the Victorian Seniors Festival rolls around'.
So said The Courier (7 October 2017), and Croquet Victoria clubs took the opportunity to introduce the game of croquet (generally golf croquet) to members of their local communities.
