Festival of Croquet at Bendigo: conditions wintry, festival successful
The omens were bad when ducks and water hens took up residence on the opening day of the NDCA annual Festival of Croquet. Tricia Devlin made an inspiring speech to a good number of players who took part in the opening ceremony, before running the first hoop of the new season.
After an hour of social play the heavens opened which forced everyone inside for a very welcome afternoon tea.
The Golf Croquet tournament was played under atrocious conditions the following two days, with showers coming at frequent intervals. A new strategy was quickly developed. Instead of hitting an opponent ball to the boundary, players despatched it to the nearest pool of water.
Winners of the GC were:
Section 1 Brian Rowe (Essendon), for the second year running
Section 2 Kaye Molyneux (Monash)
Section 3 Fay Harrison (Drysdale)
Section 4 Maria Harvey (Beechworth)
Section 5 Wolfgang Clements (Belmont).
Fine but chilly weather greeted the Association players for their tournament. Although there was no surface water the lawns were very soggy, but in typically stoic fashion, everyone made the best of it.
Lois Kirk played very aggressive hard hitting croquet to win the top section on hoop difference from last year's winner, Bob Roycroft.
Other section winners were
Section 2 Fay Pearson (Horsham Kalimna Park)
Section 3 John Brennan (Castlemaine)
Section 4 Gayle Vale (Numurkah).
Both the GC and AC results are on Croquetscores.
Despite the challenging conditions, the Festival was a great success, socially and competitively. Including opening day, over 120 players wielded their mallets, made friends with new opponents and renewed contact with old adversaries. The catering was second to none.
Our numbers would have been greater had there not been two other croquet events running against us. Events such as ours should receive full support from those who allocate dates on the tournament calendar so there are no clashes.

Victorians training hard for Interstate GC Shield
The weekend of 26 and 27 August was the last training session for the Victorian Golf Croquet team.
Over the past two months members of the team have been working very hard to prepare for playing the Interstate Shield in Brisbane in early September.
Successful Selectors’ Invitational at Cairnlea
As part of the training weekend for the Victorian Interstate Shield team, the GC Selectors invited 16 players to take part in a 2 block round robin.
This event was a great success. It provided an opportunity for these players to play against excellent competition as well as encourage and watch the test matches being played around them. In all a most successful format and I am sure it will become a permanent fixture on our calendar.
