Monash beats the weather
The Monash Open singles was held on Friday 7 April followed by the doubles on Saturday 8 April.
Beautiful sunshine – until the final game on Saturday - competitive play and a friendly atmosphere along with two fantastic lunches all contributed to a very successful tournament enjoyed by the participants from Corowa Civic, Ballarat Western, Sale, Ivanhoe Park, Sandringham, MCC, Brunswick, Ringwood along with a few from Monash.
The Division 1 Singles was won by Geoff Reilley (Monash) who won all of his games, with John Oudyn (Monash) second.
Division 2 Singles was won by Wilma Freeman (Sale) with Bruce Macgregor (Brunswick) in second place.
Lovely weather for most of the two days
The final game of the doubles was nearing the end as people hurried to pack away the marquee and anything else that was not essential to the game before the weather closed in. We just made it to the club house as the rain started to really come down!
The doubles event was won by Alastair Rowe and Heather Hyatt (Ivanhoe) with Richard Parks and Jeffrey von’t Steen in second place, narrowly ahead of two other pairs on hoops.
From left: Heather Hyatt and Alastair Rowe (winners), Richard Parks and Jeffrey von't Steen (runners up).
Congratulations to all the winners and to Jo Thiele from Ringwood who enjoyed participating in her first tournament.
Many thanks to the Monash support team, shown below having lunch after everyone else had finished.
Thanks also to the referees who were out on the courts by that time...
